Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has called for international pressure to be exerted on Turkey to withdraw its ships from the island’s EEZ.

“It is time for the UN, the big countries and the EU to undertake their responsibilities,” Anastasiades said.

He said that Nicosia is not pro-war and is not trying to resolve the Cyprus problem through military means.

“Turkey, once again, is violating international law and the legal rights of the Republic of Cyprus, we expect the support of overseas Cypriots when we report the illegal actions and dismal repercussions for efforts to resume the dialogue.”

It is not enough to talk about what is fair, he said, adding that now is the time for the UN and great states and the EU to undertake responsibilities.

“Measures need to be taken or pressure exerted on Turkey, so it finally realises that international law is…part of the UN charter”.

Anastasiades has called Turkey's bid to drill for natural gas in waters off the island a "second invasion" and a violation of international law.

Ankara disputes the exploration done by the internationally recognised Greek Cypriot administration, contending that the Turkish Cypriots have equal rights to the island's natural resources.

Turkey has also brushed off condemnation of its intrusion in Cyprus’ EEZ by Brussels, Moscow and Washington.
