Daylight Saving will begin at 03:00 on Sunday 31 March in Cyprus when the clocks go forward one hour, the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry announced.

The official start of summer time applies to all countries in the European Union and the season will officially end on Sunday, October 27 when the clocks go back one hour at 4am.

Last week the European Parliament voted 410 to 192 to back a draft law to abolish the twice-a-year switch.

Under the draft law, each of the member states will have to choose before 2021 whether it will follow daylight saving time throughout the year or maintain standard time.

The idea behind the clock shift is to maximize sunlight in the Northern Hemisphere, as days start to lengthen in the spring and then wane in the fall. The logic is that by springing forward and falling back, people add an hour of sunlight to the end of the work day.
