The Republic of Cyprus is getting ready for the possibility of a no-deal Brexit and is preparing relevant legislation the government has assured.

Government Spokesman, Prodromos Prodromos said that every step would be taken so that people living and working within the British bases area, would continue to have the same status.

On preparations for the possibility of a no-deal Brexit, Prodromou said that the issue was a very big challenge for all EU Member States as well as for the United Kingdom itself.

He added that the withdrawal of the UK from the EU without an agreement was undesirable, adding that the Cyprus government has been preparing for this possibility for some time.

"Ministers have long been instructed to record all issues that will arise if there is no agreement. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has a general strategic plan and, of course, all provisions and all possible measures will be taken to mitigate the consequences," he noted.

He added that Cyprus has been preparing legislative texts, in case they are needed and that there was readiness by ministries and departments for various issues such as trade, people movement and transactions in services.
