CYPRUS: Full-scale emergency exercise at Larnaca Airport successfully completed

A full-scale emergency scenario was successfully completed on Tuesday at Larnaca International Airport, under the codename “Aircraft Crash”.

Various government and non-governmental departments and services, operating both inside and outside the airport, took part in the exercise.

According to the exercise scenario, an aircraft incoming from Athens veers off the runway during landing and crashes within the airport area.

Immediately, part of the aircraft is destroyed and catches fire. The aircraft evacuation procedure starts immediately, while rescue teams and the airport’s emergency services arrive at the scene, aiming to rescue the passengers and crew.  

The exercise is part of the ongoing efforts to improve the level of readiness and coordination of all the Airport services involved during emergency situations.

Officials and heads of services and organisations involved in airport operation and crisis management, were invited to attend the exercise.

Airports operator Hermes Airports “expressed satisfaction concerning the final outcome of the exercise”.

“The findings of the exercise will be evaluated and used accordingly, in order to further improve the emergency response levels and the overall performance of the various services,” it added.
