Jeffrey Sachs, the UN Secretary-General’s Adviser on Sustainable Development Goals, is expected to visit Nicosia next year to promote the international initiative that Cyprus will undertake on climate change.

A written statement said that following the initiative announced by the President Nicos Anastasiades at the international conference on climate change, he contacted Sachs, a world-renowned professor of economics and leader in sustainable development.

“Based on his special interest in the region, Sachs discussed with the President the proposal that Anastasiades has already submitted for Cyprus to undertake an active role in coordinating efforts to handle climate change,” said the official statement.

“This role will be promoted in the framework of regional cooperation relations that are developing,” it added.

Sachs has accepted the President’s proposal and will visit Cyprus early 2019.
