Cyprus says it won’t take the bait as Turkey tries to raise tensions over the East Med gas search after Ankara fired warning shots against Nicosia and Athens.

Cypriot government spokesman Prodromos Prodromou says Turkey is obviously trying to artificially create a climate of tension in order to send unwanted messages to the international community, but is adamant Cyprus will not be drawn in.

“Many of the Turkish actions are illegal, contrary to international law, but on our part, under no circumstances will we take part in this artificial climate of tension which wants to give a false impression that there are disputes or questions,” said Prodromou.

“There is no dispute in Cyprus’ sea, the Republic of Cyprus has an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) which is internationally recognised by the Law of the Sea and by other international states,” he added.

He said Cyprus’ energy programme is in cooperation with influential international companies, as well as other states and it is implemented by the government to the benefit of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

He added that the benefits to both citizens and states are achieved through cooperation and the implementation of international law.

Turkey Defence Minister Hulusi Akar said Wednesday, Ankara will not allow Greece to interfere in its activities in the eastern Mediterranean. It has issued similar warnings against Cyprus' energy search and warned oil and gas giants to stay away.
