CYPRUS: Couple plunge to their death near Baths of Aphrodite

A couple believed to be tourists died on Saturday after their rental car plunged 30 metres down a cliff near the popular Baths of Aphrodite site in Paphos, Cypriot authorities said.


Police have yet to confirm the identity of the couple, but they are believed to be tourists – a man and a woman – aged 58 and 48 respectively.

The Cyprus News Agency said they were a married couple.

Emergency crews were called in after an eye-witness raised the alarm early afternoon.

Police said where the incident happened was a dangerous narrow stretch of road.

Fire department officials said the couple were pulled out of the car wreckage and the bodies had to be transported by boat to Latchi harbour and then on to Polis Chrysochous hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

Circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.

Baths of Aphrodite in the Akamas peninsula is a popular tourist attraction as according to mythology, Greek Goddess Aphrodite bathed in the waters of the natural beautiful spot.
