An App to ensure better driving behaviour and cheaper car insurance premiums is being introduced by General Insurance of Cyprus and OSeven, a London-based tech firm.

The two companies have introduced an app to help Cypriot drivers adopt a better and more environmentally-friendly driving attitude. They also hope to contribute in efforts by the police to reduce road traffic accidents.

The ‘Drive Safe’ application grades the driver’s behaviour at the end of a trip giving them a mark out of 100. The app will help drivers pinpoint their weaknesses at the wheel, which they will have to work on.

Points can be traded in for a discount on the renewal of their insurance policy with Bank of Cyprus’ General Insurance.

Drivers will also be able to compare their performance to that of other drivers.

Drive Safe’s operation is simple and user-friendly. Installed on a mobile phone and by using its GPS, it can identify the start and finish of each route and rate the user’s driving behaviour.

The app takes into account factors like speeding, mobile phone use while driving, sharp braking and aggressive acceleration.

At the end of each journey, the app grades the driver with an optimum score of 100, identifying all the points where the user’s driving was less than ideal.

Drive Safe is designed to operate with the minimum battery consumption and does not require an internet connection.

The app can be downloaded for free, through the App Store and Google Play for iPhone and Android smart phones.

"We are pleased to have the opportunity to work with the General Insurance of Cyprus, one of the most dynamic companies in the country, with which we share a common vision for safe roads with zero accidents,” said OSeven’s CEO Vassilis Stivaktakis.

“Driving safely and raising Cypriots driving awareness is our primary objective and we are prepared to invest significantly towards this direction. With the contribution of General Insurance of Cyprus, the country can be one of the role model states as far as Road Safety is concerned by adopting best practices and state-of-the-art technologies,” he added.

OSeven provides telematics solutions and analysis on driving behaviour.
