ENVIRONMENT: Earthquake in sea off Turkey felt across Cyprus

An earthquake in the sea area between Turkey and Cyprus was felt across the island on Wednesday especially those working or living in tall buildings, no structural damage was reported.


The Geological Survey Department that on Wednesday at 09:21, a seismic vibration measuring 5.5 degrees on the Richter scale was recorded.

“The earthquake was centred in the Mediterranean Sea some 170 kilometres northwest Polis Chrysochous, Paphos and a focal depth of 10 kilometres. The earthquake was felt throughout Cyprus,” said the department.

A Cyprus Civil Defence statement said: There are no reports of any damages or other adverse effects in Cyprus in connection with the earthquake that occurred today in the Antalya Gulf sea region… There is no cause for concern.”

Cyprus frequently experiences light tremors, but it is not situated on a major earthquake fault line like Turkey or Greece.
