University of Cyprus Rector Constantinos Christofides and Transport Minister Marios Demetriades discussed plans for the creation of a school on maritime science, technology and economy to be based in Larnaca.

During a meeting on Monday, Christofides said that an international advisory committee has been set up and will soon meet in Cyprus to prepare the proposal.
According to a University announcement, Monday’s meeting was also attended by Permanent Secretary of the Transport Ministry Alecos Michaelides, Senior Marine Surveyor and Head of the Seafarer’s Division Costas Costaras, and President of the Maritime Institute of the Eastern Mediterranean Zacharias Siokouros.
Demetriades was also informed about the new self-funded post-graduate programme for unemployed engineers from the shipping sector, which will be admitting the first students for the academic year 2018-2019.
The programme, which will be in English, is linked to the new faculty, as it focuses on shipping issues, and will also include practical work on board a ship.
Demetriades assured Christofides that he would fully support the endeavours of the University of Cyprus, and agreed with the Rector’s proposal for a representative of the Transport Ministry to participate in the international advisory committee..
