SHIPPING: CSC marks International “Day of the Seafarer”

The international shipping community celebrated the “Day of the Seafarer” on 25 June as set by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). This year’s “Day of the Seafarer” campaign was entitled “At Sea For All” and aimed to stress the importance of seafarers and remind the general public worldwide that the seafarers constitute the ‘blood cell’ of shipping.


 
The Cyprus Shipping Chamber, in co-operation with other associations of the Cyprus Maritime Cluster, participated in this year's celebrations through the initiation of a general public awareness campaign and promotion that included a series of activities and events under the general theme: “Tribute to the Seafarer”.
In particular, various celebration activities and events were held, during which the entire Cyprus shipping industry was invited to participate. Within this framework, the Chamber in co-operation with WISTA Cyprus, organised a joint event especially dedicated to the International “Day of the Seafarer”, on June 15, at the premises of the BSM Maritime Training Centre in Limassol. The event was placed under the auspices of the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Marios Demetriades, who also attended and addressed the event. During the event, George Hoyt, Founder Face of Shipping and NewsLink, presented his new web-based project entitled, “I am a Seafarer Mosaic” the purpose of which is to “Increase the Awareness and Image of Seafarers”.
In addition, the Cyprus Shipping Chamber, organised a crew photo competition entitled: “Through the eyes of a Seafarer” amongst the crew employed by its member-companies, and out of the many photos received and following a short-listing process headed by the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Marios Demetriades, the three best photos were chosen and presented during the Event.
So9me 55,000 seafarers are employed onboard the ships operated by the member-companies of the Chamber in Cyprus.
