‘Cans For Kids’, a volunteer-based charity set up in 1990 to raise funds for hospitals from the sale of recycled cans, has so far collected more than 25 mln cans, according to co-founder and Vice President, Rosie Charalambous.

She said that the combination of raising awareness about recycling aluminium tins and the concept for volunteerism, has helped donate €260,000 worth of state-of-the-art medical equipment to the Makarios children’s hospital in Nicosia.
In recognition for its work, Cans for Kids won the Energy Globe Award, the so-called ‘Environmental Oscar’, in the category “youth” in 2013.
It recycles about 9-10% of the used beverage cans exported in Cyprus and now has can banks all over Cyprus with the list locations available at
www.cansforkids.org and also on Google maps.
Cans For Kids has just completed a project with the Turkish Cypriot ‘Cyprus Green Action Group’ which has resulted in a similar scheme starting up in the north.
