President Nicos Anastasiades will remain in the intensive care unit at New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital for a few more days for observation after his successful operation to fix his heart mitral valve, his doctors said on Friday.

Dr. Savvas Kadis who, together with Dr. Marinos Soteriou, accompanied the President to New York, was quoted by CyBC radio as saying on Friday that Anastasiades will probably be moved to a private ward in a few days and return to his hotel for recuperation, prior to returning home before Christmas.
Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides said on Thursday that the President had been taken off respiratory support following his heart operation on Tuesday and that he was allowed to move around. He is expected to resume eating solid foods on Friday.
During the surgery, performed by Dr David Adams and his team, the President’s triglochin valves were also repaired, as was an issue he had with occasional heart arrhythmias.
By the President’s side is First Lady Andrie, their two daughters and Anastasides’ two personal aides.
Kadis had said earlier that a few days after his discharge, the President will have to return to hospital for examinations and if all goes well he will be in a position to travel in about three weeks.
