CYPRUS: President Anastasiades discharged from hospital in Brussels

President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades, who was admitted this morning to a hospital in Brussels, has been discharged.

A written statement by Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides says that President Anastasiades, who is in the Belgian capital to participate in the European Council, was admitted this morning to hospital after suffering a prolonged nosebleed.

Tests at the hospital established that he was suffering from high blood pressure.

The press release says that the President was given the appropriate treatment and was advised to remain in bed for the next 48 hours to avoid recurrence of the symptoms.

The President of the Republic is being closely monitored by a doctor in Brussels.

In statements to CNA, the Government Spokesman said that the President was discharged from hospital and returned to the hotel where he is under observation and treatment.

President  will not be attending the European People`s Party meeting or the European Council, due to health reasons, and his interventions will be sent in writing.

In a written statement, Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides says the President contacted European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and EPP President Joseph Daul, to inform them of his health and his inability to attend the sessions.

He furthermore elaborated on the positions of the Republic of Cyprus, as set out by the National Council, Christodoulides says.

He adds that the President`s interventions will be circulated in written form to all the heads of state and government participating in the European Council, and all the leaders participating in the EPP session.
