A new clothes collection campaign is launched by “Anakyklos”, a non-profit organisation, aiming to collect as many second hand clothes as possible, in collaboration with charity organisations, foundations and private companies.

The campaign will run from October 1st to December 31st, under the slogan “All of Cyprus Collects and Contributes” and the aim is to collect second hand clothes, as well as shoes, linen, bags and belts.

A similar campaign, from April to June 2014, resulted in the collection of 124 tons of clothing from 280 participating organisations. Anakyklos allocated in return 24,839 euros to these organizations, supporting their charitable work.

Announcing the launch of the campaing, in Nicosia, Anakyklos Director Doros Michael said on Wednesday that another aim was to raise awareness among the public on the need to reuse old clothing.

He added that tons of second hand clothes in Europe end up in landfills or they are being destroyed in incinerators, causing harm to the environment.

According to Michael, collecting old clothing can prove a difficult task, even for countries with long tradition in this area, where no more than 25% of the clothing available is collected.

Cyprus, he went on, is doing well in this respect, when taking into account the short period the clothing donations` program runs in the country.

In its four years of operation, Anakyklos has set up 378 metal collection banks in 30 municipalities and 115 communities of Cyprus and has collected 4 thousand tons of clothing.
