Jean Claude Juncker`s possible election as President of the European Commission will be extremely positive for the Cyprus Republic, Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides has said.

Speaking to the press Sunday and invited to comment on the fact that Juncker seems to be getting more and more support by EU countries, the Spokesman said that according to the positions so far, it seems that Juncker has a lot of possibilities to become the next Commission President.

However he said that we need to wait and see the final decisions to be taken by the European Council which will convene Thursday and Friday in Brussels.

The Spokesman pointed out that if Juncker is finally elected as President, it will be an extremely positive situation for Cyprus, as he is very familiar with the details of the Cyprus problem. He also referred to Luxembourg`s stance on the decision taken in March 2013 on Cyprus` deposits haircut, adding also that Juncker has recentrly visited Cyprus and had meetings with both the President and the Foreign Minister.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN-backed negotiations between the two communities on the island-Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots-are underway with the aim to reunite the island under a federal roof.
