The new Bulgarian Ambassador to Cyprus Hristo Georgiev said that there is a good basis for discussing a possible liaison in energy security and self-sufficiency between the two countries.
Georgiev, who presented his credentials to President Nicos Anastasiades on Monday, also welcomed the resumption of Cyprus talks and expressed his country’s support for “a comprehensive and viable settlement of the Cyprus problem within the UN framework, in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and in line with the principles on which the European Union is founded”.
On his part President Anastasiades briefed the Ambassador on recent developments in the economy and the Cyprus issue, thanked him on his country’s principled stance on the Cyprus issue and reiterated the “determination of my Government for taking decisive steps in order to find a solution that will provide a prosperous future for all Cypriots”.
Georgiev spoke of the excellent bilateral relations between the two countries. “Ι believe that in the very near future we will have the opportunity to carry out new meetings on high level with the aim of further strengthening and deepening our cooperation.”
He also thanked Cyprus for its solidarity on the Bulgarian priorities in the framework of European policies. “We are grateful that Cyprus was among the first countries to ratify the agreement for our accession to the EU and open its labour market to Bulgarians”, he noted.
“I believe that with joint efforts we will be able to find all additional resources in order to use the full potential of our economic cooperation and we will maximise the opportunities in the areas of trade and economy, tourism and transport”, Georgiev said.
He continued that “an important aspect of economic development is energy security and self-sufficiency – an issue that I truly hope that Bulgaria and Cyprus will be able to solve successfully”.

On his part, President Anastasiades spoke of the historic links between Cyprus and Bulgaria and the excellent level of relations both on a bilateral and international level.
“The forthcoming visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cristian Vigenin, to Cyprus in 2014 will provide us with the opportunity to reaffirm our friendship and provide impetus to further deepen our bilateral relations and to our shared goals for the future of our wider area”, he noted.
