An explosion near a branch of the Bank of Greece in central Athens has caused extensive damage in the area, shutting down the whole of the centre of the capital.

Witnesses said police sealed off a street after a 45 minute warning was made by an unidentified person to a local news site to evacuate the area.

Unconfirmed reports said a stolen car was packed with up to 75 kilos of explosives.

There were no casualties.

The blast outside the Bank of Greece building came as the country, plunged into a debt crisis four years ago, readied its return to international bond markets today. It is also the eve of a visit by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
