* Multinational Finance Society to look at 'The Future of Banking and Cyprus' *
Larnaca will be hosting the 2014 Multinational Finance Society Symposium next week, organised by the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) and the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan – Cyprus) in collaboration with the academic Multinational Finance Society (MFS). The organising committee is headed by Dr. Panayiotis Andreou (Lecturer of Finance – CUT), Dr. Panikkos Poutziouris (Professor of Entrepreneurship and Family Business – Uclan) and Dr. Panayiotis Theodossiou (Professor of Finance – CUT), supported by academics from Cyprus and overseas.
The symposium, an initiative to expand the academic and practical contributions of the MFS in Cyprus, will be held on Friday and Saturday, April 4-5, at the Municipal Art Gallery at Larnaca's Europe Square.
The MFS is a non-profit organisation established in 1995 for the advancement and dissemination of financial knowledge and research findings among members of academic and business communities. The objective is to stimulate and promote academic activity in the field of banking and finance and to encourage the dissemination of scientific research results among scholars and practitioners.
The symposium will host a large number of high level scientific studies by distinguished and internationally renowned scientists and will contribute to promoting academic ideas exchange and networking through the development of scientific cooperation at the international level.
Dr. Steven Ongena has been invited as a keynote speaker. Dr. Ongena is a professor of banking in the Department of Banking and Finance at the University of Zurich and the Swiss Finance Institute and he will deliver a plenary talk on his latest research, entitled “Shocks Abroad, Pain at Home? Bank-Firm Level Evidence on the International Transmission of Financial Shocks”. The plenary talk is scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 5, 18:30-19:30. The organisers have also invited prominent members of the scientific and professional community in a roundtable discussion on "The Future of Banking and Cyprus" to be held at Sun Hall Hotel in Larnaca on Friday, April 4, 18:00-19:30 (registration required). The roundtable discussion aims to bring together some of the most influential academics, policymakers and business leaders to discuss top priority issues in the banking industry. The objective is to debate important issues which are vital to remove external capital controls and stabilise the banking system in the context of the twin goals of building a sound banking system that can embrace savers with confidence and at the same time be effective in allocating capital to promote growth. Gikas Hardouvelis (University of Piraeus & EUROBANK Group) is chairing this discussion. The other panellists are Petros Florides (World Vision Cyprus), Alexander Michaelides (Imperial College Business School), and Stavros A. Zenios (University of Cyprus and University of Pennsylvania Wharton School).
The symposium is supported by the Central Bank of Cyprus, Cyprus Ports Authority and Cyprus Tourism Organisation, as well as Larnaca Municipality and Larnaca Tourism Board.
