UN Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alexander Downer, has postponed his scheduled visit to Cyprus for two days.

UNFICYP spokesperson Michel Bonnardeaux told CNA on Monday that Downer is coming in two days. “He has delayed his arrival for 48 hours for personal reasons”, he added.

The UN diplomat, who was expected to begin a new round of contacts on the island on Monday in an effort to bridge the gap between the two sides, following the rejection by the Turkish Cypriot side of President Nicos Anastasiades’ proposal on the text of a joint declaration aiming at facilitating the resumption of peace talks, is expected to reschedule his meetings on both sides of the divide. He was scheduled to meet President Anastasiades and Eroglu this afternoon.

Repeated UN-led efforts over the past four decades to achieve a political solution have so far failed. The latest effort to resume the stalled peace talks began last September, under the presidency of President Anastasiades.
