24th Energy Charter Conference to take place in Cyprus

Cyprus will host, December 5-6, at the Filoxenia Conference Center, the 24th Energy Charter Conference “15 years (1998-2013) of energy investment promotion and protection under the Energy Charter Treaty”, which is being co-organised by the Ministry of Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism and the Energy Charter Secretariat.

The aim of the meeting is to assess the last fifteen years of practice and theory in energy investment promotion and protection under the Energy Charter Treaty.

According to an official press release, approximately 140 people will participate in the Conference, representing 89 members and observers of the Energy Charter, including, inter alia, the European Union, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe.

The Energy Charter is an international organization which plays a significant role in international energy cooperation and security, market competitiveness and sustainable development. Its fundamental goal is the promotion of energy investment and trade.

On the first day of the Conference’s deliberations a high-level meeting will take place, which will be attended by Ministers and Deputy Ministers from 15 countries, Ambassadors and other government officials. The meeting on 5 December will take place in “Zinon Kitieus” conference room and will be open to the press. The opening ceremony will start on 9 am.

During the second day of the Conference, on 6 December, the deliberations will focus on issues within the organization pertaining to the implementation of the Treaty.

The 24th Energy Charter Conference deliberations will be concluded with a press conference, which will take place on 6 December at 1 p.m., in the “Jean Monnet” amphitheatre.
