High – level delegation under Prime Minister Samaras to represent Greece at Clerides funeral

A high-level delegation under Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras will attend the funeral of former President of the Republic of Cyprus Glafcos Clerides, who died on Friday at the age of 94.

The delegation will also comprise Vice President and Foreign Minister of Greece Evangelos Venizelos, Chairman of the Hellenic Parliament Evangelos Meimarakis and Greek Defence Minister Demetris Avramopoulos.

Meanwhile decisions concerning Clerides’ funeral on Tuesday and the rendering of due honours by the State were taken on Sunday during a meeting of a Committee of the Council of Ministers, under President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades, who returned this morning to the island. According to a press release issued by the Presidency of the Republic, the Book of Condolence will open at the Presidential Palace on Monday and will be signed by the President Anastasiades, the members of the Council of Ministers, Chiefs of Foreign Diplomatic Missions and state officials.

After the signing of the Book of Condolence, President Anastasiades and the members of the Council of Ministers will go at the Church of Holy Wisdom (Ayia Sofia), where the remains of Glafcos Clerides will be displayed for public view on Monday.

According to the press release, Archbishop Chrysostomos B’ will officiate the funeral service at the Church of Holy Wisdom (Ayia Sofia) to be held on Tuesday at 1100 local time (0900 GMT). President Annastasiades will deliver the eulogy, while wreaths will be laid.

Clerides will be buried at a family grave at Saints Constantinou and Elenis cemetery.

Today’s meeting of the Committee was attended by Ministers of the Interior, Defence, Justice and Communications, the Government Spokesman, the Undersecretary to the President, the Director of the President of Republic’s Office and other officers.

According to the press release, Clerides’ family wishes that instead of the laying of wreaths, donations to be made at the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP).
