Former Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, hospitalised since Wednesday morning, is still in a critical state, with family and close friends by his bedside at the Evangelistria clinic, his personal physician said.
Iosif Kassios, who had earlier said that the former president was not on life support, also dismissed rumours that Clerides, 94, was in a coma. Nor was he in the intensive care unit, he said.
“He is calm in his bedâ€Â¦but the situation is grave,” news reports quoted the doctor as saying.
“His condition cannot be pinpointed to a single causeâ€Â¦it is many things, essentially it’s old age,” he added.
Clerides’ protégé, President Nicos Anastasiades, who is on a state visit to Sri Lanka, called Kate Clerides who has been by her father’s side all this time. Also at the clinic is DISY president Averof Neophytou, government spokesman Christos Stylianides and the former president’s close aide, Pantelis Kouros.
House Speaker Yiannakis Omirou and Interior Minister Socrates Hasikos visited Clerides, together with Justice Minister Ioans Nicolaou and Transport Minister Tasos Mitsopoulos, and DISY parliamentary spokesman Nicos Tornaritis.
