Free bus fares for primary school students extended

Pre–school and elementary school students will continue to be entitled to free bus fares until January 7, Parliamentary Communications and Works committee President Antonis Antoniou said Thursday.

Antoniou said MPs were briefed during the Committee that the Ministries of Communications & Works and Education & Culture have decided to continue the practice of free bus fares for pre-school and elementary school students.

At the same time, he added, the ministries are looking into the possibility of targeted measures as regards high school students.

According to Antoniou, MPs called on public officials to reach their final decision within the next 15 days.

MPs favour the continuation of free bus fares for all students, however if that is not possible then they want targeted measures to be considered so that vulnerable groups of the population such as students coming from poorer families are not adversely affected.
