Tourism is called upon to play a key role in exiting the extremely difficult situation Cyprus is facing, Director General of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) Marios Hannides said Tuesday, adding that past experience shows that “we can make it.”

In his address at a press conference to present the "Small getaways – great experience" programme, he said this become a successful institution and helps achieve the objectives of the tourist strategy that CTO implements.

One of these objectives, he added, is to mitigate the problem of seasonality and extend the tourist season.

Hannides said “the program is tangible proof that we do not forget domestic tourism”.

"We offer the opportunity to the Cypriots through the packages to enjoy unique beauties of our country both in coastal areas and inland and to become the best ambassadors of our friends and partners in Cyprus and abroad", he noted.

In her address at the press conference Director of Tourism Annita Demetriadou said the CTO continues successfully since 2008 the program "Small getaways great experience" to help develop domestic tourism and promote local sites, domestic products and beauty spots around the island.

She said the last phase of the program was completed in June 2013 and has seen a dramatic increase in participants in relation to the first phase of the program for the period 2008/2009.
