Cyprus sees largest fall in EU employment

Cyprus recorded the largest decrease in employment both quarterly and annually, in the second quarter of 2013, according to data released Friday by Eurostat.

The number of persons employed also decreased in the euro area and remained stable in the EU27.

According to Eurostat data, compared with the same quarter of the previous year, employment fell by 6.1% in Cyprus, by 4.3% in Greece, by 1% in eurozone and only by -0.4% in the EU27.

In the second quarter of 2013 employment fell by 3.1% in Cyprus, by 0,1% in the Eurozone, increased in Greece by 0.1% and remained unchanged in the EU27, compared to the first quarter of 2013.

The evolution of employment in the second quarter of 2013 compared to the same period of 2012 was as follows: Cyprus -6.1% -4.3% Greece, Portugal -4.0%, Spain -3, 7%, Slovenia 2.5%, Italy 2.2%, Slovakia 1.3%, Netherlands 0.9%, Finland -0.7%, France -0.3%, -0.3 Belgium %, Malta 3.6%, Estonia 3.0%, Ireland 1.9%, Luxembourg 1.7%, Germany 0.6%, Austria 0.6%.

Employment growth on the second quarter of 2013 compare to the first quarter was as follows: Cyprus -2.1%, Spain -0.5%, -0.4% in Slovenia, Slovakia -0.4% Netherlands -0.4%, Italy -0.3%, France 0.0%, Belgium 0 , 0%, Estonia 1.5%, Portugal 0.8%, Luxembourg 0.7%, Ireland 0.5%, Austria 0.2%, Malta 0.2%, Greece +0, 1%, Germany 0.1%, 0.1% Finland.
