The results of the appraisal well in block 12 within the Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone operated by Houston-based Noble Energy will be announced by early October, Energy Minister Yiorgos Lakkotrypis has said.
"It is very important to establish the quantity of the natural gas reservoir so that we proceed with our planning and the next steps," Lakkotrypis said.
He said the Ministry is monitoring the appraisal drilling on a daily basis adding that the well proceeds on schedule.
"We will have results by late September or early October," he said.
Exploratory drilling carried out in block 12 by Noble in late 2011 revealed reserves of an average 7 trln cubic feet (tcf). The government is awaiting the results of appraisal well Aphrodite 2 in a bid to decide on the future steps with regard to the multibillion Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal to be constructed in the Vasilikos area, for which Noble and its Israeli partners, Delek and Avnmer, have shown interest to build.
Cyprus has also signed oil and gas exploration contracts with the Italy’s ENI and Korea’s KOGAS consortium for exploration in blocks 2, 3 and 9, as well as with French TOTAL for blocks 10 and 11.
