Cyprus Tourism Organization and Cyprus Medical Association are joining forces in order to promote the island as a medical tourist destination.

In this framework the two institutions will cooperate with the aim to secure more EU funding for the years 2014-2020.

The project is supported by various bodies and it was presented Tuesday at a press conference here.

Speaking on behalf of CTO, Annita Demetriades said that Cyprus has numerous advantages and potentials as regards the medical tourism sector. She stressed that medical tourism will improve Cyprus’ tourist product and will increase tourist arrivals.

She pointed out that cooperation must be established between government and the private sector and that "we must all coordinate efforts".

Cyprus Medical Association Chairman Andreas Demetriou said that promoting medical tourism could help Cyprus deal with the issue of seasonal tourism and at the same time support the private sector which faces difficulties due to the financial crisis.

As it was mentioned during the press conference, Cyprus can benefit from a number of EU funds such as projects to upgrade clinics and health centres, promote special packages for medical tourism and health services in Cyprus.

CTO and Cyprus Medical Association have already sent their suggestions and proposals to the Ministries of Tourism and Health and they are expecting to discuss them in person.
