Cyprus has requested the European Commission to increase co-financing for rural development programs from 50% to 85%.

In a letter to the Commission, Agriculture Minister Nicos Kouyialis highlighted that Cyprus’ request should be urgently processed.
Kouyialis discussed the issue on Monday with the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural development Dacian Ciolos.

On the sidelines of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council, taking place in Brussels, the Minister held intensive consultations to request the increase of Cyprus’ financial envelope for rural development for the period 2014-2020. Kouyialis met with the President of the Council and Irish Minister for Agriculture, Food and Marine, Simon Coveney, the next President of the Council, Lithuanian Minister of Agriculture Vigilijus Jukna and the European Parliament’s rapporteur on the Multiannual Financial Framework, MEP Reimer Boege, calling for the assistance and support on the matter.
The same issue was on the agenda of the Minister’s meeting with the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, Androulla Vasiliou, held Tuesday in Brussels.
