APOEL FC was defeated on Tuesday by French Olympique Lyonnais in their first match for the Champions League knockout stage.

Lyon overcame APOEL’s tight defence with a second-half goal by Alexandre Lacazette giving the French side a narrow 1-0 advantage after the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 match.

APOEL’s Portuguese midfielder Helio Pinto will miss the second leg after receiving a yellow card in the 52nd for a foul on Lopez.

The second leg will be held in GSP stadium Nicosia on March 7.

APOEL has already made history as it became the first Cypriot football club to reach the knockout phase of the UEFA Champions League, after finishing first in Group G.
