Romania's new Ambassador to Cyprus Ion Pascu has reaffirmed the steadfast positions of principle of his country regarding the solution of the Cyprus problem, respecting the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus, based on relevant UN resolutions.

Pascu was received on Wednesday by President of the House of Representatives Yiannakis Omirou, who said talks for a solution were not progressing due to Turkish intransigence, and condemned Turkish threats against Cyprus regarding explorations for hydrocarbons in its exclusive economic zone.

He also said the EU should send a clear message to Turkey that the non recognition of the Republic of Cyprus, during Cyprus' EU presidency in the second half of 2012, violates the principles and values of the EU and brings the EU itself into question.

Omirou also said that Cyprus was not against Turkey's accession to the EU, as long as Turkey met its obligations towards the EU, including Cyprus.

They also discussed bilateral relations and the global financial crisis.

Cyprus, which joined the EU in 2004, has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
