PIP breast implants suspect for causing breast cancer were rebranded to M-implants and sold by a company registered in Cyprus and operating in the Netherlands.

According to statements by the Cypriot Minster of Health Stavros Malas, the Ministry is investigating whether M-implants of “Rofil” company have been used for women in Cyprus that have undergone plastic surgery.

As he explained, PIP and M-implants are exactly the same thing, but the latter are produced by “Rofil”, a company which is registered in Cyprus and operating in the Netherlands.

''It is a type of implants called M – implants, which is of the same packaging and manufacturing as PIP implants, but they were 'rebranded' by a company registered in Cyprus and operating in Europe,'' he said.

Malas urged women who have possibly used M- implants to contact the Nicosia General Hospital telephone line to state their personal data, for the Ministry to have a complete list of all women who have used PIP or M – implants. He also urged women who used implants and do not know their brand name to do the same, noting that many Cypriot women have visited Syria to have cosmetic surgery.

He added that from the existing data it appears that at least 10 women have used this type of implants and about 30 other cases used implants of unknown origin.

Answering to a question, he said that “Rofil”, is under investigation for its economic activities. He added that the Ministry will first evaluate all the cases in Cyprus and will then see whether the company can be prosecuted by the Attorney General.

The Minister of Health stated that ''this is no time to panic,'' since numerous studies showed that there was no direct link between the implants and cancer.
