Inflation eased in August as the consumer price index increased by 2.9% compared with 3.7% in July 2011 and 3.2% in August 2010.
Compared with the previous month, prices increased by 0.05%. This was mainly owing to increases in the prices of certain fresh vegetables, electricity, petroleum products and package holidays.
Decreases were recorded in the prices of certain fresh fruit and certain clothing items.
For the period January-August 2011, the consumer price index (CPI) recorded an increase of 3.3% compared with the corresponding period of 2010.
Meanwhile, the EU-harmonised consumer price index (HICP) rose by 2.7% in August, compared with 3.5% in July 2011 and 3.4% in August 2010.
