The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) said hopes that modular generators, delivered by Energy International, will be able to start production by the end of August.
EAC Spokesman Costas Gavrielides said that the generators that arrived on Sunday with a total a capacity of 60MW and will be installed at the Dhekelia power plant, while other generators of a capacity of 35MW were already on their way and would be installed at the Moni power plant.
''Our aim is to connect them to the transfer system, to begin production, by the end of this month,'' he said.
He added that Energy International was awarded the tender to provide generators of a total capacity of 95MW, and that the first ones came from Oman and the others were shipped from the US and are on route in the Mediterranean.
The supply contract was concluded on August 11, signed by EAC General Manager Stelios Stylianou and Energy Int’l Business Development Manager Javier Barahona, as well as the EAC negotiating team and EI’s legal consultants, L Papaphilippou & Co.
Power cuts have all but stopped after the July 11 munitions blast at Moni naval base destroyed most of the Vassiliko power station, with the EAC warning consumers that the difference between demand and supply was still critical.
The Greek Public Power Corp (DEH) initially shipped mobile units with an output of 70MW most of which were installed before August 15, as were smaller units from Israel, while occasional wind also generated energy from the island’s two main wind parks.
The Vassiliko power station’s “blackstart” reserve unit with a capacity of 35MW also came on line on August 17.
