No power cuts are expected on Tuesday, with electricity demand at manageable levels, ever since a munitions blast on July 11 destroyed the island's main power station and plunged the island into darkness with regular blackouts and brown outs.
The Director of the Transmission System Operator (TSO), Christos Christodoulides told the CNA that power cuts are not likely to happen, as was the case in the past three days, provided that no unpredicted breakdowns occur and weather temperatures remain moderate.
Power supply conditions, he explained, have not changed in recent days, adding that people should continue saving energy.
Daily power demand was limited, at around 700 MW, Christodoulides said, due to moderate weather conditions and the holiday period.
Auxiliary units acquired from Greece's Public Power Corp (PPC/DEH) are about to come online, in addition to limited power supply purchased from the Turkish Cypriot power station in the north, some 8 MW from micro units from Israel and wind power from two wind parks. The Electricity Authority has also signed a deal with a major U.S. operator for the lease of additional units, compensating for the 850MW Vassiliko power station that was knocked out in the blast.
Meanwhile, during the past three days, the Fire Department was called in 94 cases of fire, of relatively small scale, and responded to 100 other requests, including rescues.
