Relatives of Commander Andreas Ioannides, one of the 13 seamen and firefighters killed in the July 11 blast at Mari naval base that knocked out the Vassiliko power station, have called for the resignationof the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General, as well as the suspension of the chief of police and his deputy, following allegation published in Tuesday’s Politis that the minutes of an inter-ministerial meeting on February 7 were altered.
Anastasios Antoniou, a Limassol advocate acting on behalf of the Ioannides family, said that there is admission on behalf of a senior civil servant that orders came from “higher up” to change the minutes. He said that the inability of the Attorney General’s office and the police to act swiftly to arrest or suspend the persons involved has forced his clients to call for their resignation and the appointment of an independent judicial inquiry.
