The transport sector was worth EUR 1.7 bln in 2009. according to the latest report on transport from the Statistical Service.
According to the report. the broad transport sector rose in current prices by 0.2% and amounted to EUR 1.748.2 mln in gross terms. compared with EUR 1,744.9 mln in 2008.
The value added of the sector increased to EUR 888.2 mln in 2009 from EUR 834.2 mln in 2008.
Transport value-added was 5.8% of GDP at current market prices.
During 2010, 3,607 vessels arrived at the various ports of Cyprus compared with 3,915 in 2009. Of these 2,647 or 73.4% arrived at Lemesos (Limassol) port, 730 or 20.2% called at Larnaka port and 230 ships at other ports.
At the end of 2010 there were 1,862 ships on the Cyprus Register with a total of 22,057,525 gross registered tonnage, down from 1,856 ships in 2009 with a total of 21,715,158 gross registered tonnage.
Civil aircraft landings during 2010 increased to 30,931 compared to 29,529 in 2009. Passenger arrivals through airports increased to 3,653,401 in 2010. compared with 3,536,049 in 2009.
According to the report, motor vehicles registered in 2010 dropped by 12.5% to 44,025 from 50,291 in 2009. Newly registered private saloon cars decreased by 13.3% to 31,423 from 36,252 in 2009.
The total number of all vehicles registered was 760,112 in 2010 compared with 738,025 at the end of 2009.
The number of road accidents reported to the police increased to 1,883 in 2010 compared with 1,856 in 2009. In 2010 60 people were killed in road accidents and 1,762 persons injured, compared with 71 dead and 1.723 injured in 2009.
