European Parliament Vice President Gianni Pitella said here today that he will ask EU head of External Relations Catherine Ashton to place the Cyprus talks as a priority for the EU.

Pitella was speaking to the Press after a meeting he had with the President of the Social Democrats Movement EDEK, Giannakis Omirou. He said that they discussed the ongoing UN led negotiations aiming to solve Cyprus problem, adding that the European Parliament has stated many times that in order for a successful outcome to be reached Turkey must remove the obstacles at hand.

The fact that a number of Turkey’s EU accession chapters have not yet closed is not by chance, he said, adding that despite the fact that he supports Turkey’s EU accession course he also notes that it may not continue unless it fulfils its commitments towards the EU.

A strong commitment by the European Commission and the EU Council is required if negotiations are to be accelerated and a positive outcome to be reached, Pitella said.

Cyprus was divided after the 1974 Turkish invasion. UN led talks are underway between President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu in an effort to reunite the island under a federal roof.
