CyStat: Employment in “other services” sector increased in 2008

Employment in the sector of Other Social and Personal Service Activities increased by 10.3% in 2008, compared to the previous year, and reached 35.619 persons, the Statistical Service of Cyprus announced today.

This work force accounts for 8.8% of the total economically active population and 9.4% of the total gainfully employed population.

This data is included in a report, issued today by the Statistical Service, which also provides data on the number of enterprises, employment, labour costs, gross output, value added and gross fixed capital formation.

The sector of Other Social and Personal Activities includes the sectors of arts, entertainment and recreation, as well as other service activities and activities of households acting as employers.

According to the report, during 2008, value added at current market prices, for the sector of Other Social and Personal Service Activities, increased by 9.0% to 582,1 million euros compared to 533,9 million euros in 2007 and its contribution to Gross Value Added was 3.8% in 2008, the same as in 2007.

Gross output increased by 11.4% to 834,5 million euros from 748,8 million euros in 2007.

It is also noted that in the Private sector, of the total value added, 39.5% was generated by the Other service activities, 33.5% by the arts, entertainment and recreation and 27.0% by the activities of households as employers. In the Public sector, value added was generated through the Arts, entertainment and recreation.
