U.S. stocks opened little changed on Thursday as consumer shares rose and data showed first-time claims for jobless benefits declined slightly last week.
The market could face pressure from profit-taking the day after Wall Street racked up its best day in eight weeks on strong manufacturing data in the United States and China.
The Dow Jones industrial average dipped 3.63 points, or 0.04%, to 10,265.84. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index added 0.38 points, or 0.04%, to 1,080.67. The Nasdaq Composite Index was off 1.19 points, or 0.05%, to 2,175.65.
