The solution of the Cyprus problem depends mainly on Turkey, President Demetris Christofias has pointed out, adding that a political settlement can only be found if Ankara decides to comply with UN resolutions and international law.

Speaking in Nicosia on Thursday, President Christofias said that the Greek Cypriot side reiterates its political will to continue working decisively, on the basis of principles and with flexibility, to achieve an honorable compromise that will reunify the country and the people, free Cyprus of Turkey’s occupation and secure the human rights of all Cypriots.

“We exploit every possibility to reach such a solution. We do not hide behind ideals and unfeasible solutions to continue seeing the current unacceptable and dangerous situation carry on. We have proved our political will for a solution of the Cyprus issue the soonest possible. If the other side shows the same political will, we could find a solution”, he stressed.

President Christofias pointed out that those, in the international community, who wish to see a solution in Cyprus should exert pressure and influence on Ankara.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. President Christofias and former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat began peace talks in September 2008. Talks now continue with the President and Dervis Eroglu, who succeeded Talat.
