Cyprus services turnover down 0.9% in Q1

Turnover in the general services sector dropped by 0.6% in January – March 2010 compared with the same period of 2009 according to the Statistical Service.
The general turnover index does not refer to the entire services sector.
By subsector, the performance was mixed.
On the positive side, turnover in architectural and engineering activities rose by 5.1% and telecommunications services rose by 2.2%.
Accommodation and food service activities also rose by 2.2%.
On the negative side, there was a fall of 9.8% in the turnover of computer programming and related activities, legal and accounting activities fell by 6.4% and travel agencies dropped by 4.6%.

Water transport up 14.5%

Separately, in the transport and communications sector, turnover in postal and courier activities rose by 16.5% over the year earlier in the first quarter.
Water transport rose by 14.5% in 2010.
On the negative side, land transport fell by 22.4% compared to the corresponding period of 2009 and air transport dropped by 16.6%.
