Cypriot leaders to continue economy discussion

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat will meet here Tuesday, in the framework of the direct negotiations with a view to reach a settlement of the problem of Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion in 1974.

The meeting will begin at 1000 local time and will take place in the official residence of the UNFICYP Chief of Mission Taye-Brook Zerihoun.

Speaking after the last meeting on March 4, UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer had said that the leaders had a substantial discussion about the economy, the economic chapter, and various aspects of that.

During Tuesday’s meeting, the leaders, according to Downer, will discuss the economy, but also European Union matters.

The UN official had said the expectation at the moment is for their meeting on the 30th of March to be the last one before the elections take place in the north, the first round of which are on the 18th of April”.
