Suspects to appear in Cyprus Court for theft of the body of T. Papadopoulos

Suspects, arrested on Tuesday in connection with the theft of the body of the late President of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos, are expected to appear today before Nicosia District Court for a remand order, police have said.

The three, one is said to be serving a life sentence and is in Central Prisons and another two persons, were arrested following the discovery of the body, on Monday evening, at a local cemetery, south of capital Nicosia.

A police spokesman explained that the person who is already in jail, serving his sentence, will not be taken to court.

All three of them were arrested in connection with participation in crime, in accepting to commit crime and in pillaging the grave of the late President Papadopoulos.

A police spokesman said on Tuesday that many more people will be called in for questioning in connection with this case.

Papadopoulos’ body was removed from the grave on 11 December 2009 from the cemetery of Deftera village, on the eve of the first annual memorial service for his death.
