Cyprus industrial production down 8% in 2009

Industrial production fell by 8.0% over the same period of the previous year in January – December 2009, according to the Statistical Service, having risen by 3.1% in 2008.
Within the overall industrial sector, the manufacturing index fell by 11.6%. Mining and quarrying (influenced by construction demand) fell by an even steeper 11.6%.
Electricity supply rose in 2009 by 2.7%, less than the 4.4% recorded in 2008, while water supply and materials recovery leapt by 25.1%, after a drought-induced fall of 18.1% in 2008.
In December alone, the index of industrial production reached 101.8 (base 2005=100), recording a decrease of 6.5% compared with December 2008.
Meanwhile, industrial output prices inched up by 0.5% in January compared with December 2009, with manufacturing prices decreasing by 0.2%.
Compared with the same month of 2009, the industrial output price index rose by 0.2%.
