Cyprus motor regs dropped 25.7% in 2009

Figures for December confirm that 2009 was a terrible year for car sales, as total registrations of new and second hand vehicles dropped by 25.7% to 50,291 from 67,722 in 2008.
Of these, 23,333 were new vehicles and 26,958 were used vehicles, said the Statistical Service.
In 2008 registrations had risen by 5.2%, whereas in 2007 they had leapt 33.1% as taxation on cars came down.
Within the total registrations of private saloon cars decreased by 26.2% in 2009, to 36,252 from 49,100 in 2008.
Used private saloon cars registered in 2009 reached 21,271 or 58.7% of saloon cars registrations, while new private saloon cars registrations were 14,981 or 41.3%.
Self-drive cars registrations decreased by 49.6% to 1,099 in 2009, compared to 2,216 in 2008.
Goods conveyance vehicles decreased by 19.4% to 6,998 in 2009, compared to 8,680 in 2008.
Light goods vehicles decreased by 16.0% to 5,584, from 6,645 in 2008.
Heavy goods vehicles decreased by 30.5% to 1,414 in 2009, from 2,035 in 2008.
Mechanised cycles registrations decreased by 22.1% to 4,821in 2009, from 6,190 in 2008.
EU countries were the main suppliers of motor vehicles to Cyprus in 2009, accounting for 57.2% of total vehicle registrations, while Japan’s share fell to 28.8%.
