Cyprus has been reelected to the Council of the International Maritime Organisation for the next two years, with the support of 134 member states out of 153, securing the second biggest number of votes after Singapore during the 26th IMO General Assembly in London.
“This reflects Cyprus’ importance in the activities of the IMO and the appreciation and trust the member states shows to Cyprus and the contribution of the Department of Merchant shipping to international maritime,” a government announcement said.
Cyprus was represented at the meeting by Communications and Works Minister Nicos Nicolaides and Permanent Secretary Makis Constantinides.
Cyprus’ merchant fleet ranks 10th worldwide and is the third largest among European Union member states after Greece and Malta.
The Cyprus Shipping Chamber issued an announcement saying that “the election of Cyprus to the Council of the International Maritime Organisation, which is the responsible body for the development of the international shipping policy and legislation, is considered very important due to the fact that Cyprus will continue to have the opportunity to contribute actively in the formation of policies for international shipping, as well as to promote the interests of Cyprus Shipping at international level.”
