The number of teenagers using the Internet is growing at a steady pace in Cyprus, according to an annual survey, with those over the age of 13 increasing to 42.9% of all users, compared to 41.2% in last year’s survey.
More than half surf the Net on a daily basis and 68% prefer to get online in the evenings from 6pm to midnight, according to the e-Cypriot survey conducted by Ogilvyone, the multimedia division of the Pandora Ogilvy advertising agency, and research company Evresis.
More than half (52.2%) of the 1049 surveyed by phone in early November, were aged 13-24.
Last year’s survey found that most of those using the Internet did so at work, as 53.8% had said that they only accessed the Web at the workplace. However, this year’s survey saw that figure drop to less than half (23.4%), while there was an increase in the number of those who accessed the Internet exclusively from home (up from 4.8% to 8.6%) and those who got online both at work and at home (up from 41.4% to 68%).
Furthermore, the majority of Cypriots (87.6%) have a high-speed ADSL connection, with the main priorities remaining the same as last year, mainly for news and information (62.3%), entertainment (28.2%) and sports news (22.1%). Buying goods and services on the Internet has also increased to 12.6%, while the number of those spending more than 1,000 euros a year on the Internet has more than doubled from 12.7% last year to 33.3%. The main goods purchased online were clothing (36.4%), books (13.8%), TVs (13.6%), computers (13.5%) and holiday-related packages, tickets and hotels (12.9%, up from 2.1% last year).
