The 26th Assembly of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is taking place in London, at the IMO Headquarters, from 23 November to 4 December where there will be a voting process to elect the new members of the 40-member Council.
Cyprus is represented at the IMO Assembly with a delegation from the Ministry of Communications and Works headed by the Minister of Communications and Works Nicos Nicolaides, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Makis Constantinides and the Director of the Department of Merchant Shipping, Serghios Serghiou who will pursue Cyprus’ re-election as a member of the IMO Council.
Over the last few years Cyprus has been actively and constructively participating in international maritime matters. Its constant and valuable contribution to the Assembly’s sessions and also the recognition of its contribution by other member states are expected to play a defining role in its re-election as member of the IMO Council.
Cyprus constitutes one of the largest maritime forces globally. The Cypriot registry ranks today among the top ten international fleets with around 1,100 vessels, totaling around 20 mln tonnes. At the same time, the sector of ship management and other shipping services have also been developed locally.
Cypriot merchant shipping has huge political and financial significance. For a small state like Cyprus the fact that its flag is flying all across the globe in tandem with Cyprus’ striking presence in various international maritime organisations, reinforce the Republic’s legal personality and state entity.
