The Mayor of Engomi and the Nicosia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EVEL) seem to agree that the government hastened in its decision to move some departments to the grounds of the State Fairs Authority without considering the traffic chaos that would be created.
EVEL vice presidents Elena Tanou and Panayiotis Papaphilippou, as well as the Chamber’s Director, Socrates Heracleous, paid a visit to Mayor Nicos Pavlides to discuss matters of public interest, where the main issue on the agenda was the government decision announced by the Communications and Works Minister last week.
Minister Nicos Nicolaides said that several government departments or ministry offices would move to the Fair grounds which are unutilised. This raised the immediate response from Dr Pavlides who said that although such a move and subsequent erection of new government buildings would satisfy the requirements of the local town planning for Engomi, the congestion on Engomi’s roads would become unbearable.
Both the mayor and the Chamber officials agreed that any plan to relocate government office would have to be preceded by a proper road traffic and environmental plan to determine its viability and impact on the local community.
